The 2009 US Open Golf Championship takes place on the Black Course at the Bethpage State Park, Long Island, New York, which in 2002 became the first public golf course to host a golfing major in the USA when it hosted the US Open.

The course proved very difficult too with only Tiger Woods managing to finish under par, he won the tournament that year by three shots from his greatest rival, Phil Mickelson. It was his second victory in the US Open at the time, but it was his last until he won last year in remarkable style, following a play off with compatriot, Rocco Mediate, at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in California.

His victory was remarkable as he played five rounds of golf on virtually one leg, seeing off Mediate after a close run play off round. Follow that success, Woods immediately withdrew from the rest of the 2008 tour and underwent knee surgery, which happily he has fully recovered from and is now back playing full time on the tour.

Woods of course will be favourite in the US Open Golf betting to win again this year and as usual there is little reason to doubt that he can pull it off and win his 15th golf major, especially on a course on which he has proven winning form.

Players of the stature of Mickelson and Spain’s, Sergio Garcia, will no doubt be a threat to Woods and both acquitted themselves well when it was played at Bethpage in 2002. Mickelson was second to Woods on level par, while Garcia finished in a tie for fourth place, 4 over par. Woods, Mickelson and Garcia are the top three ranked players in the world currently and it could be that they will have to battle out the 2009 US Open between them.

The early antepost betting has Woods as the favourite, with Mickelson and Garcia behind him. Three time major winner, Padraig Harrington and former US Open champion, Geoff Ogilvy are also liekly to feature prominently and pose big threats to all comers.

Argentine Angel Cabrera, who won the US Masters at Augusta back in April this year, also won the US Open in 2007 and on that form he is surely a huge threat to win a third major.

Over recent years the US Open has had the tendency to throw up a host of unexpected and often first time major winners. It seems that if Woods isn’t winning then a new name appears on the trophy. Other than Woods, only South African, Reteif Goosen, has won it more than once. The following is the list of the last ten winners and with five first time winners appearing on the list, it could be worth spending time studying the form of the players who haven’t yet won the US Open.

His ball wouldn’t stop. It scurried past the hole, then trickled over the bank at the back of the green. It came to rest in a clump of grass. A few inches closer, and he could’ve comfortably two putted, Goggin guessed. A few inches longer, and Watson could’ve chipped it close from a better lie.

And that’s when Tom Watson lost his nerve. That’s when he betrayed his age and the long years it’s been since he’d been a golfer capable of winning majors.

Watson chose to putt the ball. Once the greatest of chippers in his heyday, in his moment of truth, he put his trust in the one club which prematurely ended his golden years.

As it was, he hit the putter too firmly. It went eight feet by, to the left of the hole. Everyone gasped. Eight feet to immortality was eight feet too much. “Made a lousy putt,” Watson later bemoaned.

The playoff against Cink, who through no fault of his own was the villain of the piece, was a nightmare.

With Stewart Cink, who’d made a remarkable birdie on the last hole to get to 2-under par in the greenside bunker on the first playoff hole, Watson from the middle of the fairway hit a fat five iron into another trap.

Each year, more and more snowbirds are migrating to the many beaches in California. With over 1,000 miles of coastline, almost 120 cities beach and more than 450 beaches, the decision can be difficult to choose somewhere to stay. All beach towns are definitely not equal, ranging from coarse to coastal beaches to fine sand, pebbles and rocks.

The Orange County area is one of my favorite winter getaways. It's so close to Los Angeles for times when you need correction big city, but far enough away that you can still find a haven of little people to enjoy the sea view. You can walk or ride a bicycle in miles along the beaches and waterfront walks and sunbathing moderate winter temperatures. Here is a decline of some of my favorite Orange County beach towns.

Seal Beach

Shopping Grande Beach, including clothing for over 25 people, with less of Laguna or Newport crowd, which combined with free parking make this beach an all around winner. It has lots of options for dining, entertainment, and an old town with wide streets and shady. You can fish one of the pillars in the state longer, and enjoy the views that go on forever.

Huntington Beach

Also known as "Surf City" and the theme song of the same name, Huntington Beach was a humble people who surf become a growing city with a population of over 195,000. Residents and visitors are treated to eight miles of uninterrupted beach scene, the 350-acre Central Park complex, cycling / walking and equestrian trails, world class surfing and professional sporting events, as AVP Pro Beach Volleyball and the Surf USA City Marathon. The long pier is the perfect place to watch surfers or stop for breakfast and enjoy the view in the morning.

Main St. is famous for its surf shops, but dig deeper and find the 5-point shopping center full of popular outlet stores, and the Bella Terra shopping center with a new 20-screen theater. One of the largest shopping centers in the nation, South Coast Plaza, is located just minutes away.
